Needs a little bit of work.
The rifle is awesome! It shoots great and handles like a dream especially in a tree stand it’s smaller and easier to move around up there. My only complaint is that the magazine isn’t made very well the little clip that holds it in the rifle broke but I whittled a piece of mahogany down to fit and drilled out the hole for the roll pin and put it on the magazine and it’s been working great like that for a few years now! A plastic magazine with a wood catch clip who would have thought?
- Alabama Outlaw, AL

DO NOT BUY
This clip will NOT FEED shells in temperatures below 0 degrees C. I have three clips and they all will not feed shells 2 and 3 when the temperature drops. Cost me during hunting season with a followup shot on a bull moose. Unacceptable that Ruger has not fixed this well known problem.
Charles B

Needs Redesign
The original 5 round magazine is poor: Does not feed reliably, becomes brittle in the cold, release controls impossible to use with gloves on and does not last. Sold the rifle based on this and bought a Ruger American that takes single stack AI pattern magazines. MUCH BETTER. Come on Ruger, lets redesign this ASAP or junk it all together.
- Ed, KY

Great American rancher rotary magazine
Terrible. Doesn’t feed 300 blackout subsonic. Worse there is.

ruger mistake
The first time out at the range the latch broke in half, called ruger & they agreed to send me a new one, problem is i bought 2 ruger americans whats next ?
- joseph m zapisocki, NY

Mag breaks easily
The magazine that comes with the rifle loaded well for me, but the plastic clip that holds the magazine in the gun broke after a few reloads. When I buy a ruger I expect it to last decades, it’s pretty disappointing when a poorly designed component ruins the joy of ownership.
Cecil Swenson

Ruger American 300 Blk Out mag
carbon fibre and plastic construction is used to lower construction costs and give Ruger customers a great rifle a little cheaper at the POS. Look at H&K 91 and 93 steel mags. $100-200 a mag is necessary to build a rugged and reliable mag. American gun folks demand cheap mags overall. Folks get realistic and pay for the high grade magazines. Get real people!
- Roy Holland, MN

Worse than horrible
I bought a RAR in .300 BO with the AR style mag. It fit so loose it rattled and it certainly wouldnt feed. Rugers fix is to SELL me an AI adapter for $25.00. I got the adapter and slip in a AI style mag from another RAR and it just plain sucks. I never thought Id say it but no more Rugers for me. They must be farming them out to china. Pure junk.
- John Chamorro, CA

Same as others
Bought a new mag hoping that the one which came with the rifle was flawed, but the new one is flawed also. Both push cartridge too high up and then jams every attempt. Finally, gave up!
- Clifford Williams, TX

Ranch .223
Probably one of the worst magazines i have ever seen! The second time to the range and the second mag change when the release button landed on the ground and the mag fell out!! Gun shoots pretty well, but if you cant carry extra rounds with you it is now a single shot. Certainly not what I paid for.
- Mark, NH

Ruger Magazine
Just terrible quality from Ruger Firearm.
- Rudi Ferdinand, AK

Like the rifle - hate the magazine
I like the rifle - American compact 223 stainless. I HATE this rotary magazine. I find them difficult to load, and occasionally have feed issues - with the ones Ruger immediately sent me replacements. I really hope they offer the redesigned box style for this rifle too.
- J Fineran, MD

5.56 NATO mag is worthless
I am in the same boat as everyone else here, it jiggles around so much in the receiver and jams always and the rifle is not a few months old, has anyone heard from ruger about a fix for us who own this style and model of rifle????

Piece of junk
Jammed almost every round, second trip to range the wannabe lock tab broke, seriously ruger? this POS should be recalled, selling and getting a savage a cheap gun that actually works
- Ken Ellsworth, WA

The fix for 300 subsonic Blk
I had the same problem most of you are having. Guns a little cheap but so is the price. very accurate I can send 5 208 Hornaday sub sonic and hit 5 sreel 5 time at 200 yds . That not bad but with a good trigger that would shrink to 2 to 3. Put a dedicated Lanser systems mag in and youll be shifting gears all your frustration gone. This works Ive run a 100 round through it and it just keep getting better. Ruger could fix a lot of un happy customers and I told them that. But no response another 5.56 pmag and it will do it all again. So forget about Ruger fixing there problem with a little common sence. Spent $18 on the Lanser and be happy. I was ready to brake the gun in 2 pieces. Iam not the greatest but been shooting 50 yrs and have 5 300 Blks in various configurations love the Bolt guns Good to kill a deer at 300yds drops 61 but its quite and deadly.Guns. good gun once you change mags youll like it.

Terrible
Terrible, terrible, terrible. Please please please make a mag that works better!!! The gun is great, the mag is horrible. This cant be that hard to fix.
PA

solvents
if you get the bore cleaner Wipeout on the mag on my Ruger American it melts the plastic
Paul

CRAP!
Rifle is a great little rifle- clip wont feed, spring is too week. Plastic release is junk- broke first time used. Have two clips and both are worthless- almost ready to buy a new rifle than replace these clips!
WA

5 Round Magazines Jamming
I have the .300 BLK rifle with the 5-round magazine; and have 3 extra magazines. All the magazines jammed every time I tried to use them. The base of the case was getting caught by the lips of the magazine, which caused the bolt to push the cartridge base down into the magazine which rotated the bullet towards the top of the receiver, causing the jam. On magazines I have for other rifles, the space between the magazine lips in the front section of the magazine where the necked down part of the case is when a cartridge is in the magazine, is wide enough for the base of the case to pass through without getting caught. Maybe that would work. Ruger - please design a magazine that works for my .300 BLK rifle. Thank You.
- Gary, PA

Will not feed, easily broken
Mine won’t feed, and the locking tab broke at the roll pin location. The rounds jam at a high nose up angle.
- J, GA

Will not feed
I have gone through four of these pieces of junk. They will not feed and will fail you at the wrong time. I would give 0 stars if that were an option.
- Will Fix, VA

Total Junk
Ruger you owe it to your loyal fans to make a 40 dollar replacement metal mag that works! You have the best products & service in the market & this design is totally inadequate. Charge a few extra bucks for the upgraded mag so what, but 40 for another POS?! Not cool.
PA

5 round mag.
Any of the mags I have bought occasionally hang up last two rounds. A little sanding with 800 grit and a little graphite, no more problems. My main gripe, $40 for a extra mag... why so expensive?
Dan

mags are not reliable
My 6.5 cm mags work frum time to time. Ruger really needs to address this problem sometime soon.

Junk mags
RAR 5.56. First mag failed to feed after a few magazines. Ruger sent me a replacement, which is junk, too. The 10/22mag is the leader in the industry, why can’t Ruger come up with a usable mag for the American Ranch Rifle?
- Gene Mullane, CO

.223 and ,270
I bought the .223 Predator and liked it so much I purchased the .270. both very accurate and consistent barring my shooting ability. The only complaint I have is the magazine. I havent had any issues with either caliber, but they feel cheap. So I almost baby them hating to see what happens if I drop them. They sure arent worth $40 to replace.
- Bryce Hiigel, CO

Magazine Totally Inadequate
I purchased the Ruger Ranch in .223 Remington. I love the rifle, detest the magazine. The barrel is a 1 in 8 twist, so perfect for the heavier bullets. The chamber is even throated to seat the heavy bullets perfectly in the cartridge. Well when seated properly, the OAL is too long for the cartridge to fit the magazine. In fact, to get a 75 grain Amax bullet seated rearward far enough for the OAL to fit in the magazine, the bullet drops into the cartridge case. Who is the moron engineer that designed a rifle to shoot bullets that wont fit into the magazine? I took the magazine apart and had the rear portioned milled out by CNC. The magazine should have been manufactured this way to begin with. Get with it Ruger. You ruined a perfect rifle for want of a workable magazine!!
- Rumanji, WI

Bad Mag design
Difficult to load quickly, .300 Blackout cartridges want to slip past the follower in some weird way. Once loaded, half the time they feed straight into the breech face. Bad, bad design. cheap construction. Need to factory recall and refit with the new AR magazine system.
Thomas Smith

ruger american rifle mag
the magazines for this rifle are a joke. and the price for replacements 40.00 plus shipping is an insult! they do not feed reliably at all. I would not consider taking this rifle out on an important hunt. my confidence in your products is severely shaken. you need to make this right with your customers!!!
- Mitchell, TN

No problem getting replaced
The release tab broke under normal use , one call to Ruger and a new one is in the mail free of charge.
- Big Al, MS

Terribly disappointing.
The stock 5 round rotary magazine that came with my .300 BLK Ranch Rifle is simply horrible. Does not feed half of the time. Basically I have to chamber the round with my finger most of the time due to misfeed. It is a spring tension issue, so I am not even sure that a replacement mag would work better. Basically I got myself a manually loaded single shot rifle. Not exactly what I wanted to get.
- Gyula Soos, GA

Awesome rifle, terrible mags
As others have said, excellent rifle for the money. Rugged and accurate. But the magazines are appallingly crappy. Honestly I cant believe Ruger ships the rifle with these mags. They are made of the cheapest feeling plastic, in my opinion. Feeding issues abound with several types of 300 blk. ammo. Ruger, if you are reading this, I love this little rifle. But youve gotta design some better, higher quality mags.
- David, MO

magazine
I have the 450 and the 300 blackout.the 450 works fine but the 300 is crap, the mag is junk. why make a nice rifle an sell it with a cheap mag that cannot load to capacity?
- steve messerly, NE

.300 blk 2 shot rifle
Gun is great mag is cheap junk sh. This is pathetic. Makes remminton 710 mags look good. 2 to 3 shots max in my gun or it jams. What a poor design. Did they hire engineers from jennings? Make a metal mag or I will never buy another ruger. You dirty the American brand with this junk.
Marc Amber

300BO mags
Bought rifle and an extra mag. Both mis-feed first two rounds.Ruger sent me two replacements and they do the same. All have metal follower. Guess its a three shooter! POOR design.
- Eddie Harmon, VA

Mag,mag,mag... where are tho good mag?
Original mag shot well for about the first 30 rounds reloads, & factory hornady. Started having major , consistent feed issues. Called ruger good customer service! explained issues and sent me a new updated magazine. Now have problem with first round feeding! Second, third, and forth, ok. What is going on ruger!?!?!?!?!?!? We did our jobs and spent are hard earned money on your product rifle, great, can you do the right thing, because its the right thing to do. And get us a working, dependable, reliable, magazine.
- Ledezma, IN

300 Blackout mag, poor quality, poor feeding.
I have three magazines for my American 300 Blackout love the rifle but hate the mag none of which will feed a shorter OAL 125 gr cartridge. The first two rounds nose dive in the mag and the next three usually, but not always, will feed properly. I took one mag and made a spacer that moved the cartridges forward 1/4 inch and feeding is better but not great. Once the cartridge is moving out of the mag it has about an inch of empty space to travel before contacting the chamber adding to the loading difficulty. Loading single rounds is a difficult project at best. The 7.62x39 uses a Mini 30 mag why cant the .223 and BO use a AR mag and solve the problems?
- Michael Schamun, WA

Clip breaks easily
This plastic clip broke on me the 4th time I ever used it, very disappinted, the latch broke off when I depressed it to remove clip from firearm. Why such cheep plastic in the clip? I dont know
Russell

American 5rd magazine
The stock magazine is just disappointing to say the least. I cant feed the first round when its full. I can feed the 1st round about 25% of the time when I have 4 rounds in there. Works ok with 3 rounds, but thats not acceptable by any means. Ruger, make a better mag!

300 blk ranch rifle magazine
I had trouble with this magazine feeding consistently. I filed a little on the front of the magazine so that the bullet would exit more smoothly. It helped some. The night before I went to the range I sprayed a heavy coat of WD40 on the inside and let it drain out and dry overnight. It worked perfectly the next day.
Richard Ksenich

mag for RARR 300 BLK
What a great rifle! What a piece of crap for a magazine! Had no feeding issues at all. Shot 20 rounds through a new gun, the mag falls out of the bottom of the gun with the lock in system broken. How could the Ruger team build such a nice rifle and creat such a piece of junk for the magazine? Its been treated with kindness for the five times its been clipped in place.
- Stuart, TX

Terrible magazine!!!
I have had the rifle less than 30 minutes and the magazine broke! Exactly where some other reviewers have said, the release/retention lever, the plastic that holds the pin in. Never even shot the rifle!! Sad piece of junk. Plus the rifle is supersonic with my 300 blackout subsonic rounds. VERY disappointed!!!!!
- Andrew Jonak, OR

magazine issues
I had a lot of problems with my 300 BLK mag when I first got it. It would a 3 shooter. I learned that I had to feed it longer cartridges. It would not feed with 110 grain bullet loads. Now it works OK. I would like to see a 10 round mag.
- mike Sears, KY

mag problems
mag works well with regular ammo, but this is a 300 blk to shoot subsonic. loads long sharp bullets ok, but shorter ones will not feed at all, they come out of mag and tip up and since they are not long enough they hit the top of chamber and will not slide in. gun doesnt shoot subs very accurate. though bolt gun would be better, but ar with 8 inch barrel and surpressor gets 2-3 inch groups with cheap cast bullets and 1 1/2 inch with match kings at 100 yards. this gun got 4 inch groups at 30 yards, hate to see 100 yards. dissappointed but will keep trying, at least will have a nice little gun for a grandson to deer hunt with regular ammo.
- dan, WV

American Rifle Ranch - 300 BLK
The rifle itself is excellent! However, I wouldnt give you 10-cents for that sorry plastic magazine. Mine broke the first time out zeroing the scope. I am NOT going to pay $40 for a new magazine. Ruger owes all of us a new free metal magazine to replace this piece of junk.
- Thomas Benefield, GA

Predator ammo mag 223
When I shot this rifle for the first time, mag would not seat without having to push clip forward. Plastic clip then broke. Ruger is replacing mag but the plastic clip needs to be upgraded!!! This design or rather parts should be replaced with something more sturdy. Its not rocket science.
- Andy, MT

Ruger American Rifle 5 Round Mags???
Got one with the rifle and broke after I loaded one time. Ruger were very nice and send me a new replacement but it was the wrong part number. I ordered a new one and it broke too so now I need to send it back to Ruger. A bit frustrated but at least Ruger is helping out.
Nasser

Sorry Clips.
Sorry plastic clips you cant bolt a shell in the gun without fingering it. Hangs up on the entry. Need to redesign it. Need to send me one that works.
- Weldon Walker, TX

Works!
My Ranch 556 works with the mag, if it is loaded properly. There is a loading control line on the right side of the mag. If you use this to load, the ammo will go in easily. you just need to push the cartridge back to touch the plastic. Then no mis-feeds occur at all. In general, $40 for a spare cost Ruger 1 star, a 10-stack would be nice instead of the fancy rotary type for flush looks, quality should be comparable to the 10/22 type rotary to justify the high price. We customers and Ruger fans should have a choice: The AR 556 comes with a Magpul.....so why not a 10-round to save time on the range? Let us keep the gongs ringing without long loading breaks!.
- John, CA

Flawless Functionality
Lets see....Insert the base of each 300 BLK cartridge into the magazine cutout slot and slide the body of the cartridge under the guide lips until it hits the stop. Place loaded magazine in the rifle; cycle the bolt to chamber a round; discharge the weapon; cycle the bolt repeatedly until remaining cartridges are either fired or extracted and ejected. Feeding is slick and consistently reliable, and the four plus one round capacity makes the rifle legal for hunting. These are not hard to find online for around $30.00, and the build quality is more than sufficient. Whatmoredoyawant?.
- Bill Miller, SD

Top Load
Dont forget to observe the position of the top load in the magazine. It doesnt go all the way to the rear of the magazine like the other rounds. Align the base of this round with the TOP LOAD arrow indicator.
- Bill Miller, SD

Good for the Price
Its not the best mag in the world but it brought the price of the american rifles down enough that they could include some excellent features that are normally not seen in that price point. Top Reviewer has is exactly right, load them p-mag style and they work fine. My 223 even holds 6 rounds instead of 5 and my 6.5 creedmoore holds 4 instead of 3. Wish they made a box mag for this gun but until then it works just fine if used properly.
- Logan, YT

Clip is junk
Well I was shooting my Ruger predator and the magazine just fell out well the lock broke rite where the pin goes through it And Ruger wants 40 dollars for a new piece of junk clip it should not cost over 10 dollars

Excellent if done right
I have 3 of these magazines now, and all are flawless. If they are loaded from the top p-mag style like the instructions direct, they are excellent. If you attempt to load them like an overgrown 10/22 mag, you ARE going to have problems. Its not designed that way.
- Michael Page, KY

Junk mags
I have 2 ruger Americans, a 300blk and a 223. I am on my 4th mag between the 2 of them. Luckily a local store has them in stock or Id have sold the rifles by now. Ruger needs to fix this, love the guns, HATE THE MAGS!
- Clayton Cook, AK

No problems
Have two of these. Able to load 6 rounds. They work flawlessly.

poor magizine
Love the gun. Hate the clip. Dad bought one and has a terrible time reloading Hard to feed ammo in. Hoping to see a different option and with a 10 round?
Richard

308 and 30-06 mag. for american rifle
I wish that they would make a 10 round mag for the amnerican rifle. either Ruger or some other aftermarket company. the five round mags. work good in my two rifles. the 308. is awsome to shoot put scope on it and bore sited it two shots and it was ready to go. go my deer with it with one shot.hit the deer and flipped it over ,never moved after that. my 06 is great also shoot a moose at three hundred yrs. one shot went maybe thirty yds. and droped. I have three mags for 06 and two for 308. need 10 round mags. and yes very expensive for the mags at 40 per mag.
- Mike Lanouette, ME

magazine
havent tried it in the rifle, loading the mag is a bit tough for my wife. we re-tired a savage axis because of mag problems loading we have a number of Rugers in our cabinet and never thought we would find one like this.
- george mc, MT

.308 4 rd magazine
I purchased 2 magazines the one I got with the rifle had terrible feeding problems. There was hardly no spring tension to push the round up. The second one I bought fed fine and you can feel the stiffer spring when loading the clip. I wonder did Ruger have two different contracts for the spring manufacturing? And yes i agree with the other posters: this not a $40.00 clip this is a $10-$15 clip. Has anyone found a aftermarket clip to replace the lemons some people are getting?
- Cav Krieger, CA

So Far so good
Mine has worked good so far. Ruger has always had excellent quality BUT i was very surprised that they are made from plastic. Would like to see a little better components. Maybe a stronger polymer or steel. I understand in a way why they would use this material. Its cheap and wont rust, however there is steel inside of them so.......
- bob, OH

Great mag
Everyone is saying how bad this mag is, but I just tried mine out today and it worked like a champ! It took 5 rounds without a hitch and ran them out smooth as glass. Another great Ruger rotary mag!
- Scott Nelson, MT

Rotary Magazine
Waited around three months to receive my rifle in a 5.56. I can not give enough praise for the rifle itself, however to put it plainly, the plastic rotary magazine is difficult most times to load. I do not see this magazine lasting very long. Ruger dropped the ball here. Need a metal replacement, maybe a double stack.

Not bad, when fixed
I have gotten or ordered 4 of these. It takes a sharp pocket knife and a little scraping to get them to work. See rugerforum.com under ruger American 223 mag fix. Other than that, I like it.
- Survival Advisor, NM

Ruger American 5.56/.223 magazine
Seldom will this magazine accept more than 3 rounds. When more than 3 rounds are loaded, the additional rounds always mis-feed. I am using new, never fired, brand name ammo. This magazine has a serious design flaw.
- J Weyandt, PA

223 Magazine
I just bought a Ruger American 223 from Bass Pro, I took it out to shoot it for the first time, the first round I tried to put in stove piped and so did the rest of the shells I tried.I took the gun back to Bass Pro, they tell me the magazine is defective and gave me Rugers phone number to call them to send me another Mag. I wish I would have got on Rugers sight and read the reviews on this Rifle before I bought it. When I called to order the new mag. they told me the magazines were on back order, that it would be about 2 weeks to get it. I hope they improved these magazine. Im not a happy customer!!
- George, PA

223/5.56 Magazine works OK
Have a Ruger American Ranch, and I seem to be one of the few that does not have many problems with the mag that came with my rifle. As long as I push the rounds all the way to the rear, it seems to feed fine. Also, I can easily get 6 rounds in this supposed 5 round mag. First time, I didnt even notice I had done it until I shot the first 5 and saw I had one more... meaning I can get my ranch to hold 7 with one in the pipe. The 6 round capacity could be an anomaly. Would give 5 stars if the mags had a more solid construction, ie. thicker polymer, metal feed lips, metal latch, etc. Then maybe the price for spares wouldnt feel like a cruel joke. Looking forward to Ruger or someone else to make a better mag, maybe an all-metal 10 round box that hangs a little below the bottom of the gun. Id buy several of those...

204 Ruger Magazine
Purchased the weapon, and immediatly found that this magazine needs work. It is hard to load, shells dont line up properly. When it is cold, they seem to stick. I have artheritis in my hands and fingers, should have designed it more on the 10/22 design. Rifle shoots great, 1/2 groups at 100 yds. with factory ammo. Just wish the magazine worked better.
- Big Cec, UT

Ruger American .223 magazine
This magazine has a good, positive seat and works 100% so far. Well see how the plastic holds up but so far it works great.
- Bob Lund, ID

plastic magazine
The magazine is very cheap made and hard to load. The price on an extra should be about $10 max.
